Quick answers to the questions every first-time buyer asks. No experience needed to start a herd — just the right preparation.
How many alpacas do I need to start?
Alpacas are herd animals — they need at least 2 companions of the same gender to thrive. Most starter herds begin with 3-4 alpacas. Mixing males and females requires careful separation, so we usually recommend starting with one gender.
How much land do I need?
A general rule is 5-8 alpacas per acre on quality pasture. So 3 alpacas comfortably fit on half an acre with good grass and supplemental hay. You'll also need a 3-sided shelter, sturdy fencing (4-foot), and access to clean water.
What does annual care actually cost?
Budget approximately $300-500 per alpaca per year for hay, grain, vet care, shearing, and routine supplies. Costs scale down per-animal as your herd grows. Shearing is a one-time spring expense — we can connect you with mobile shearers.
What if I have no experience at all?
That's completely normal — and welcome. We'll walk you through every step before, during, and after the purchase. Many of our buyers started with zero alpaca experience. Stacey's lifetime support means you're never figuring it out alone.

Farm Visit
We invite serious buyers to visit the ranch in person — meet the herd, walk the property, see how the alpacas live. Most decisions get made standing in the pasture.
Take Home
We coordinate paperwork, health certificates, registration transfer, and transport. Within 1-2 weeks after the visit, your alpaca is home with you and our 30-day check-in begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions buyers ask us most.
-
We don't ship alpacas ourselves, but we maintain a list of trusted livestock haulers who specialize in alpaca transport across the western United States. Many buyers also drive in to pick up their animals — it's often a great excuse to visit the ranch in person and meet the herd. We'll help coordinate whatever works best for your situation.
-
Huacaya alpacas (about 90% of the breed) have dense, crimpy fleece that gives them a fluffy "teddy bear" look. Suri alpacas (rarer, about 10%) have long, silky, lustrous fleece that hangs in pencil-like locks. Suri fiber is more valuable per ounce but Huacaya is easier to work with for beginners. Both make excellent pets and produce premium fiber.
-
Absolutely — and we strongly encourage it. Most of our buyers visit the ranch in person before making a decision. You get to meet the alpacas you're considering, walk the property, ask questions in real time, and see how the animals are raised. Visits are by appointment after your initial inquiry. Schedule one through the inquiry form below.
-
Every alpaca leaves with a current vet-issued health certificate, so it's healthy when it arrives. That said, animals are animals — things happen. Stacey is available by phone for the life of the animal to help you navigate vet decisions, breeding concerns, or behavioral questions. We've never abandoned a buyer.
-
For most sales we ask for payment in full at pickup or before transport. For larger purchases — multiple animals, breeding stock, or show-quality individuals — we'll discuss payment plans on a case-by-case basis. Mention financing in your inquiry and we can explore options that work for both sides.
